What Is An Espresso?

Espresso is just a fancy word for a small shot-sized glass of very strong coffee. Some of the popular types of espresso drinks include cappuccino, cafe latte and cafe mocha. An espresso is made by forcing pressurized hot water through tightly packed, finely ground espresso coffee. The result is a thick, dark brown coffee with a bit of crema (foam like the head on a beer) on top.

Espresso Machine

A simple espresso machine heats up the water in a sealed chamber and uses the pressure from the hot water itself to force the water through the coffee. A major disadvantage of this type of machine is that the pressure depends on the water temperature. The temperature needed to create enough pressure to push the water through the coffee might surpass the ideal brewing temperature, therefore spoiling the taste of the coffee.
